Home-made shopping bags

This Is Not A Plastic Bag

They are all the rage and their limited release has lead to prices on internet auction sites passing £200. Now you can make your own shopping bag for a few pence.

Not got a spare £200+ to spend on that designer bag, this one would be your own recycled, bespoke and 100% original version.

This has to be the simplest thing to make and gives you loads of opportunity to be creative and set a trend of your own.

Morsbags, the organisation, also encourages you to make loads of bags with your friends and give them away outside supermarkets.

It's called Guerrilla Bagging and involves recycling material into simple shopping bags which means that less plastic bags end up in the seas and in trees.

How to make your own Morsbag:

*Step One
Cut two rectangles of material, about 46cm x 51cm (18" x 20") for the bag.
Cut two strips of material 46cm x 10cm (18" x 4") for the handles.

*Step Two
Iron narrow hem along one side of both handles. Then fold the other long side into middle of the handle material, and lay ironed hemmed side over it (may sound confusing - easy in practice - and all this ironing is to avoid extra seam sewing, so persevere!).

*Step Three
Stitch down middle and either side to make it strong.

*Step Four
Iron narrow hem on top of bag pieces. Iron over again in wider hem.

*Step Five
Stitch hem, enclosing handles (pointing downwards) as you go.

*Step Six
Turn handles upwards and stitch firmly in place .

*Step Seven
Sew around the 3 sides inside out. Turn right and sew round again for extra strength.

*Step Eight
Admire your work!

If you would like to join a local group to make you won Morsbag, why not pop along to the Fish Market in Northampton and join the Stitch and Bitch ladies? They meet every Thursday and you can book your space by contacting Abi Jackson on 0797 2862740 or jacksonsharp@hotmail.com

Send us your pictures of your own bags. Good luck!
