One of many warehouses in Northants
Warehouses 'vital' for local economy
By BBC Radio Northampton's James Burridge.
The head of a Northamptonshire development company says the construction of warehouses is vital for the county's economy.
Concerns have been voiced about the size of developments affecting the local landscape and countryside. But transportation companies say there's a great demand for warehouse space in the county because of its ideal central location.
Mike Hayes from the West Northants Development Corporation told BBC Radio Northampton:
"Development will be carefully controlled. I understand the concerns people have, but it's vital for so many reasons. Firstly the county has a skills shortage, we won't always be able to attract an electronics manufacturer. We have to play to our strengths - we are a major centre for the logistics industry. But we also want the office based jobs that come with the need for warehouse space. If these firms don't come to Northamptonshire they'll go somewhere else."
Wanted: Warehouses in Northamptonshire
The company behind most of these developments, Prologis, has told BBC Radio Northampton that there is a big demand for warehouse space in the county - mainly because of its geographical situation.
Andrew Griffiths is the Managing Director of Prologis UK. He told the BBC:
"Northamptonshire is at the heart of the logistics industry and we have clients wanting warehouse space in this area. Our experience has taught us what our clients want in terms of the size and cost of the warehouse required. Contrary to what people may think, we are filling the units in Northamptonshire. Yes, they have been built speculatively - but we are finding people who want to move in, such as Wincanton, Bosch and Siemens."
There are going to be more warehouses built in the next few years. The WNDC has confirmed that a new Prologis warehouse will be constructed in the Swan Valley by the M1 for Sainsbury's. There's also the possibility of other warehouses being built on the outskirts of Daventry, Kettering and Wellingborough.
Bob Lane is Chief Executive of the North Northants Development Company.
"There won't be an endless amount of warehouses being built in Northamptonshire but people must remember that the county is a logisitics hub. Things can be done though to make them more aesthetically pleasing."
