Starlings over Sixfields

People flocked to Sixfields in early 2007 to witness this natural phenomenon. See it for yourself by watching our video.

Starling facts

  • They can live for as long as 22 years
  • They are smaller than blackbirds
  • Starlings have a short tail, pointed head, and triangular wings
  • There are around 1.2 million territories of starlings in the UK

What is not only a truly incredible sight but also a lucky mascot for superstitious Cobblers supporters?

The starlings gather around reed beds

It happens to be an enormous flock of starlings in the Sixfields area of Northampton. They're proving to be more than just Northampton Town's next door neighbours.

During the winter time, the birds gather around the reed beds alongside the recently-opened Edgar Mobbs Way.

Amazing patterns

Every day around dusk, small groups of starlings gather together to form amazing patterns in the sky.

Each evening, people had been parking their cars to witness the spectacular sight.

Some superstitious supporters of the Cobblers swear that the starlings give the team good luck. In fact groups of supporters stand up and cheer when the birds fly over Sixfields during a Northampton Town match.
