Saints' Spencer cited

Northampton Saints fly-half Carlos Spencer has been cited for the sin-binning tackle he made during the EDF Cup match against Newport Gwent Dragons.

Spencer has been cited for an alleged dangerous tackle during the Saints' EDF Energy Cup defeat against the Dragons in Wales (7th October).

The former All Black will face a Rugby Football Union disciplinary hearing in Bristol on 24th October. Spencer was yellow-carded for the tackle on Dragons' scrum-half Gareth Cooper at Rodney Parade.

The New Zealander appeared to dump Cooper head-first into the turf although Cooper wasn't injured in the incident. Three-week suspensions were handed out for similar offences to Harlequins Stuart Abbott and London Irish Paul Hodgson earlier this season.

A major blow?

If he is banned, then it could be a major blow to Saints' Heineken Cup hopes. Northampton open their Heineken Cup campaign away to French giants Biarritz on Sunday, 22nd October before hosting Borders six days later.

Spencer could now miss both of those Pool Six games, with Saints having already lost captain Bruce Reihana and England hooker Steve Thompson to injuries.
