Burton Latimer has become a landmark for the county with the introduction of 10 wind turbines. The Burton Wold Wind Farm is the first of its kind in Northamptonshire. With the ability to produce enough energy for 10,000 homes, or 25% of all the homes in the borough of Kettering, it's a significant step towards the region’s renewable energy requirements. Through the production of this renewable energy, it will reduce carbon dioxide by 40,000 tonnes each year - the equivalent of taking 25,000 cars off the road. Council Leader Terry Freer said: "Once again, Kettering is at the forefront of new developments. We are delighted that we shall be able to contribute a large proportion of our renewable energy target through this wind farm project. "We hope many other boroughs follow the example of Kettering and that all can make a contribution to promoting energy from renewable sources." The farm will feed its energy into the National Grid, which will be a maximum of 20 MW; or 47 million units of electricity annually. The UK as a whole currently produces 1,300 MW, though the target set for 2010 is 10,000 MW. |
