The Crimea

Live review: The Crimea

By Griff Weekender
The debut album's out now in stores, Peel's backing is getting more mentions than ever and the rumour of another Radio 1 DJ turing up has made the night even busier. But tragedy rocks tonight...

The Crimea, The Soundhaus, Northampton

So you know where I’m coming from on this, I’ll be honest from the start… I love this band.

The affair started six months ago as I publicly stated back then, once the album arrived in the post. My subsequent visit to see them live only compounded by appreciation; The Crimea rule!

So you’ll understand how hard it is for me to be too harsh. It’d be like jamming a pair of scissors into my leg. Though it looks like I’m going to need something to bite down upon…

Having arrived late and ashamedly missed Marla Singer, I had to squeeze in at the back, the troops are out tonight! Apparently there was a rumour Jo Whiley might turn up…. when did the local scene become so fickle?

Since their last visit, The Crimea have been to the hardware store. Pretty little lights surround the stage and a scary old lady adorns a picture frame hanging at the back. Maybe they should have spent the time in the rehearsal studio instead…?

On the record, the songs have power, guts and spine-tingling emotion. And that’s what you want from a live performance; to see that passion right in front of you, to connect on another level. Tonight that’s all missing.

The Crimea

The Crimea are more than capable of pulling it off. I’ve witnessed it first-hand; but not tonight. Whether the current tour is taking its toll, it was an off-night, or the rather quiet crowd didn’t give the required atmosphere, something missing and it’s blatantly obvious.

Davey, as always, is giving it his all, seizing his body with emotion portraying the lyrics into the microphone, but it isn’t enough. The sound’s tinny and quiet, and the vocals are weak.

We have got a crop of ‘new’ material to feast upon not featured on the debut album, Tragedy Rocks, which is something. Either way, it’s left me in pain and with spilt blood to mop up!
