Blue Girl by the Pollard brothers

Blue Girl

George & Bill Pollard

It's been five years since Northampton's Pollard brothers' last joint exhibition, and by the looks of things, they’ve been spending most of that time drinking tea...

Pollard brothers' exhibition

Drawing, painting, photography and print work from the Pollard brothers can be seen at Gallery 58, Bridge Street, Northampton, between 3rd & 23rd December 2005.

Art is for Christmas, not for life TWO

GEORGE POLLARD: The last time Bill and I had an exhibition, we did some big paintings together. One of a girl ascending a staircase can still be seen hanging in The Picturedrome on the Kettering road.

For this second show, although there are a few pictures from the interim years, it's mostly new work. We've had five years to do something, but in a classic "don't do your essay until the night before its due in" style, you can guarantee that there will still be wet ink / paint on a good percentage of the pictures when it goes up.

It’s not that Bill and I are lazy as such, but you've got to think hard about the subject for your next picture. The best way to do this is to sit down and have a cup of tea, and since the last show we've brewed up on a regular basis.

BILL POLLARD: I'm now very competent at tea making, my favourite bag being a PG pyramid, but every now and again, just for comedy value, I'm not adverse to a 99 so I can shout to George... "make mine a 99".

GEORGE POLLARD: Choosing a title for the exhibition was no easy task either. It takes an enormous amount of planning and foresight to add a "TWO2, and it's something we didn't undertake lightly.

BILL POLLARD: I was all for sticking "GTI" on the end, I thought that was much funnier, but George had eaten a few pies that day, and sat on my head until I relented and let him have his own way.

Turin by George and Bill Pollard

Turin

GEORGE POLLARD: As the title (may) suggest, all the work is for sale with a percentage going direct to supporting the Roadmender. No doubt your parents / neighbour / pet would greatly appreciate a superb piece of original artwork as a Christmas present, so pop to your nearest Ikea and get a Jack Vettriano print.

Or alternatively, see what we've been doing, and then pop to Ikea. I'd like to suggest you have the 15 meatball and gravy lunch option while you're visiting.

I have the good fortune of knowing both Pollard brothers and purchased my Pollard original some time ago. It's a giant and vivid piece still makes me chuckle to this day. Remember, a Pollard isn't just for Christmas it's for life!

As an art critic based in Philadelphia I regularly see stunning works of art. But after reading this article I have booked myself on a flight to the UK so that I can see this art work first hand. And yes, I too would hearty recomend a trip to your local IKEA! Good luck boys!

Since the Roadmender has been shut down, there has been a change of venue for the exhibition. It will now be shown at Gallery 58 on Bridge Street, running from Saturday 3rd December, until the 23rd December. The private view is still on the opening night, betweeen 6.30 and 8.30 pm.

Very Warholesque!!!

Whilst perusing the net with a cup of tea perched on my lap I happily came across this article... I too have a copy of 'Art of the Midland Pioneers' and have photocopies of these two artists pictures stuck on my wall. Having believed they had faded into obscurity I am really excited about the chance to own some of their origional artwork!

Looks like derivative 2nd year student work to me.

I think the style and scope of the Pollards' work is quite breathtaking. They're mentioned in the 1998 book "Art of the Midland Pioneers", which listed them as "some of the most exciting talent in the region today". Whilst they remain glib about their achievements, a fair proportion of their work is startlingly complex and underpins the strong sense of community that the two champion. Its good to see that they've been rewarded with another exhibition, and I'm very much looking forward to seeing what's new from the Pollards' palettes!

Truely inventive takes on everyday scenes - nice one lads!
