Waendal Weekend 7 - 9 May, 2004

Five thousand people, including visitors from around the world, are expected to take part in this year's Waendal Weekend.

They'll follow 5km, 10km, 15km, 25km and 42km routes in Wellingborough and the Nene Valley countryside. Cyclists can also join-in, following 25km and 42km routes.

Event co-ordinator, Bob Entwistle, says people come from far and wide to walk in the event: "We don't realise how lucky we are in this country. We take for granted our public footpaths that criss-cross fields. But everywhere else in the world, walkers have to follow roads or specially prepared tracks. That's why so many people from abroad want to come and join the Waendal Walks."

There's special interest this year from Japanese and Dutch walkers.

The organisers are celebrating 25-years of the event (it started 26-years-ago but was cancelled in 2001 due to foot and mouth disease).

A teacher at Weavers School, Bill Greenwood, dreamed up the idea of the walk when he took a party of children to the Netherlands and saw a similar event. He's returning to officially open this year's events.

Six people are on schedule to complete their 25th Waendal Walk - and will get a special commemorative medal.

And for those who find that trudging the fields around Wellingborough gets a little too much, students from Tresham Institute will be on hand to provide foot and back massages!
