FACT FILE

St Crispin is the patron saint of shoe makers. Probably born in Rome, he and his brother Crispinian were themselves shoemakers. They travelled to France where they converted many people to Christianity. They were eventually beheaded by the Roman Emperor Maximian in about 286. The St Crispin Feast Day is 25th October.

27th, 28th & 29th October, 2003

It's back - and for an extra day. For its 10th anniversary year, the St Crispin Street Fair should be bigger and better than ever before. This is your essential guide.

For three days, Northampton town centre streets will be lined with more than 100 funfair rides, stalls and shows - stretching for over a mile. The organisers are predicting more than 100,000 visitors.

The fair will dominate Abington Street, Wood Hill, Mercers Row, Drapery, Gold Street and the southern end of Market Square.

It'll be built from 5.00am on Sunday 26th and will 'disappear' on the night of 29th/30th.

The fair will be opened by the Mayor of Northampton, Cllr Terry Wire, at 10.15am on Monday 27th. The opening ceremony will take place in All Saints Square.

Hot rides
The organisers believe one of the hottest attractions this year will be Doctor Fryte's Freak Show, but they're not saying what it is or what it does.

Amongst the rides will be the Capriolo - a high thrill ride brought in from the Netherlands. It'll be in the Market Square and promises to give passengers a free-fall effect. It has a gondola where eight passengers sit on the end of an arm that reaches 48 metres high. It has a top speed of 90km per hour.
