As one of the guides, I can answer several of your questions.
We have to limit the number of people in the house to 30, and there has to be a guide with each group because of Fire Regulations. We have no Fire Exit signs, which would spoil the effect. Also, the rooms are so small that more than 6-8 people and you can't move! Timed entry helps us arrange this fairly.
Unless there is a large pre-booked tour, "dropping in" is usually possible on weekdays, particularly Monday. Pre-booked tours ensure that thos who are travelling specially can get in.
At weekends, you would be amazedat the "flood". Yesterday (20 March) was extremely busy all day, in spite of the storm.

I'm so glad that 78 Derngate is open to the public. I've visited it and it's really amazing. I love anything to do with Mackintosh from furniture to his paintings and this was a wonderfull opotunity for me.

I am shortly bringing a social club to Northampton and we would like to visit. If the house has a permanent curator, I think that a 10am - 4pm visit Sat - Thursday available without booking sould be available. These hours are not unsociable for a curator or guides to cope with, and will bring in far more people than the current booking system. I believe that such a wonderfully historic house would benefit from being loved, visited and cared for by all and sundry. All houses give off vibes from past persons living in them, I am sure that this house itself would adore and revel in the warmth of admiration.
I hope though that we will be able to book and thoroughly enjoy the experience.
kind regards to all staff there.

not sure if you knew that furniture from the house is in Brighton Museum , I did a short project on it years ago . Mackintosh used an early plastic on it as decoration .

Just to note to say how wonderful the house is - many congratulations to everyone involved in the restoration. This architectural gem will really put Northamtpon on the map!
Thanks too to our charming guide, who made learning fun.
It was particularly appropriate for my daughter to visit - she took her German A Level lessons in the house when it was part of Derngate School, and remembers the house as being cold and spooky!
Well done and thanks again for a really memorable visit.

I have tried to phone to book a time to visit and have been unable to do so. I have left a message for them to contact me and have heard nothing. Please let me know how I can book.

I agree that pre booking can be awkward. For example, I am coming from Sussex and if I am held up and ultimately let you down because of a motorway problem you might feel inclined to refuse me entry another time. Please consider allowing a come as you please entry and if there is a flood of visitors then they must understand that they might have to wait.

I would be interested in visiting, but disagree with the idea of pre-booked timed entry. This discourages tourists, and also those who like me sometimes have an hour or two to spare unexpectedly. What sort of flood of daily visitors are they expecting?
