Define the word hero, it's a word used in everyday life. The dictionary says: 'a person who is idealised for possessing superior qualities in any field'. Quite a tough standard then!

Not so long ago we asked you who you thought your hero should be for your county. The person who would be remembered for many years to come because of what they've done. We asked you to vote through the BBC Northamptonshire website and the response was fantastic! Thank you! Well here it is, the moment of truth.

Contenders

Here in Northamptonshire we were spoilt for choice. So many great people have been born here or have connections with the county.

There were a few contenders for the top spot of Local Hero for Northamptonshire. The battle was between Francis Crick, famous for his part in discovering DNA; Charles Bradlaugh, the 19th Century MP who promoted women's rights and birth control; Caroline Chisholm, the emigrants' friend, and one other!

Diana, Princess of Wales
Diana: Northamptonshire's Local Hero

That one other is possibly the most famous woman in the world, though sadly no longer with us. None other than Diana, Princess of Wales.

The Queen of Hearts was voted Northamptonshire's Local Hero by a landslide! The others didn't even come close.

There's little that can be said for Diana Spencer, that hasn't been said before. The future Princess was born in 1961 and spent her teenage years at Althorp in Northamptonshire.

Worldwide

Everyone knows the story of the shy young girl, thrust into the limelight; The marriage, children, divorce, charity work and of course the tragic end in Paris in 1997.

But it seems despite her worldwide popularity and appeal she will always be a Northamptonshire girl, especially in Althorp, which is her final resting place.

Sheila Guinnane
Landlady: Sheila Guinnane

Sheila Guinnane is the landlady of this pub in Moreton Pinkney in Northamptonshire. She changed its name, in honour of 'England's Rose'.

“I thought she was a fantastic ambassador for our country," she said. "Customers are reminded just what a wonderful woman she was.”

Diana, Princess of Wales, was a hero to many across the world, but to those in Northamptonshire she will always be your Local Hero.
