Map of the county showing Rockingham Motor Speedway

Britain's newest motor racing track (it opened in May 2001) is Britain's first all-seater motor sports stadium.

It covers a 300-acre site near Corby and was was the first new oval race track since Brooklands in Surrey closed in 1936.

The circuit has hosted a variety of races including Champ Car, ASCAR, British Superbikes, Formula Three and Days of Thunder.

It's increasingly putting on pop concerts, attracting such names as The Darkness, Blue, Busted and Lemar.

Testing

The track's story began more than a decade ago. Despite the fact that American Champ Car and Indianapolis Racing cars were built in Britain, there wasn't a suitable venue for testing them in this country. The former steelworks land in Corby was being considered as a site for a test track. But it soon became clear that there was a demand for a major motor sports venue in this country. In 1993 the speedway was given planning permission.

From the original idea of one small test track, Rockingham Motor Speedway opened with a possible 10 track variations.

Noise

These vary from the 1.5 mile, 60ft wide Oval Circuit with four turns, to the 2.56 mile International Long track with 14 turns, some more challenging than others.

Although many local people have welcomed the new venue, some are not so happy. There have been scores of complaints about excessive noise on race days and traffic congestion in surrounding areas.

it absoluty awesome and i always go but can never get there love you all xxxxxxxxxxxx

kat
i love it and i waish that there was one nearer to where i live but i guess i will just have to live with travelling. xxxxx

Jeremy
People nearby just don't realize how much good it does for the local economy and image of Corby, which wasn't great before Rockingham was opened. Anyway, it's mostly corporate work now, which creates little noise.

Debbie
My dad races here, the track is fantastic, i love it and its a great day out for the family too !

Dan
It's the best track in the Country, but under used

james
rockingham is great i am doing a presentation on it

Barbara
I have been to Rockingham three times. I saw both the Champ Car races there and was a supporter of Rockingham when it was first thought of.I think it is fantastic and I am just sorry that the Champ Cars did not return. I shall never forget the two races there, just out of this world.I would love another big series to go there and then it would be on the map again...

Martin
Wonderfull racetrack shame about facilities for competitors

timmy
i live NEAR the race track and it spoils most summer evenings

Linda
Great days out. I realise noise is a short-term prob, can't we just have some fun anymore? Keep racing.

Andrew
Best race track in the UK. At Silverstone you see 1-2 maybe 3 corners, at Rockingham you see every corner and all the action. The oval is also very good, they just need NASCAR or IRL to go there

lisa
to many other race tracks are closing, corby is a fantastic day out. we need more speed ways around the contry, people who dont want it dont like anything and need something to moan about.

The Newt
It would be nice for some more oval tracks for our own British version of NASCAR - the SCSA stock cars are a little bit boring at the moment with the lack of huge grid sizes found in NASCAR.

Richard
Finally, a new circuit in the UK, however, it needs more championships. The British GT's were there, and it was great. The Infield cirucit is very good for a Roval, and we need to see mroe championships make use of such a good circuit.

Gail
This is a super thing for the economy of our Town - thats right our town. It is in Corby? Not near it or by it - IN IT. It is near Gretton and close to Rockingham - so lets stop being snobbish and say what it is - a fabulous attrction to orby

Olly
Its an awesome venue, bringing enjoyment to thousands. Needs more high profile championships though. Why don't these moaners get a life and go out for the day, or even better get involved, they might actually enjoy it. I don't think motorsport can be seen as contributing to global warming, especially considering the amount of emissions a Jumbe Jet pumps out taking people off on their holidays... its all leisure, there is no difference!

gemma
one word brillant

Sunoco
Nascar may one day race there. The days of thunder series is a Ok but not quite good enough. Britain needs more great tracks like this.

Mike
It's all very well for people who don't live near it to say how great it is, but the noise in Gretton (approx 3 miles away) spoils most summer weekends. Apart from being a blight on the landscape, it's not even a good track according to most people who race. Anyway, Northamptonshire already has Silverstone, why bother with another track - particularly a boring oval?

Dean
A fantastic facility that has put Corby on the map, even if the various media sources refuse to associate it with the town. I can hear a low humming on racedays some 4 miles away, not complaining though! Fantastic view wherever you sit and a great value day out.

sarah
Its a monstrosity! i hate it with a passion, why did they have to build this awful creation they try to blame global warming on poor motorists; and yet they find it acceptable to construct things like this!

frangenduso
brilliant day out, why do some people have to moan?

Daniel
We payed 40 to see racing and Tony Christie as a family whereas at other Tony Christie concerts you would have to pay about 40 just for him

Pete
Great circuit. Noise is not intrusive at all. Should and could be used more. Great place for BMW's sponsorship - they use it for great advantage.

bradley
the scsa racing at rockingham is the best. it gives us a great start in oval stock car racing! its a brilliant family day out! anybody who loves car racing and thrilling action should watch this! check www.daysofthunder.co.uk

laura strickland
i think that this is the best thing thats happened to corby

chris brown
i work at the speedway and its the best job i have ever done i am a marshall there and i have met a lot a stars

LAURA
I THINK IT IS GOOD IT IS THE BEST ATTRACTION CORBY HAS HAD.

Caz
What's all this 'off the A6116 near Corby' business? It's IN Corby - stop being so snobbish and silly!

John
are they ashamed to say the curcit is actually IN Corby?

Paul
It's put Corby on the map, it's a brilliant facility.

Baz
A fantastic circuit for spectators - you can see the whole track from the comfort of your seat. Rockingham, together with Silverstone, keeps Northamptonshire at the heart of British motor racing.
