Map of the county showing Rockingham Castle

William the Conqueror ordered the castle to be built. In medieval times, Richard the Lion Heart used the castle. King John left his treasure chest in the Great Hall (and it's still there).

It was Henry VIII who granted the castle to Edward Watson, and the Watson family have owned it ever since.

Rockingham Castle
Rockingham Castle came under attack from Cromwell's forces.

During the Civil War, Cromwell's forces took control of the castle.

During Victorian times, Charles Dickens (a friend of the family) was a visitor and Chesney Wold, in his story Bleak House, was inspired by Rockingham.

James Saunders Watson is the present owner and the castle is also his family home.

Visitors can tour the castle and the grounds, which overlook the magnificent Welland Valley.

I am the Operataions Manager at the Castle and I am sorry to read Tom's comments. Keeping the roof on a building like Rockingham is a very expensive business. All income received from our visitors is ploughed back in to maintaining the fabric of the Castle. We have a garden ticket which is £4.50 which gives access to 18 acres of beautiful gardens.

Not bad if you like castles. Shelia was very informative.

Tom
£7 per adult is very extortionate for such a small place to visit, especially if you don't want to go in the castle itself.

Matt & family
Well worth a visit. There's plenty to see - and it still feels lived in. The grounds are gorgeous.
