Watton Library-cam

This image will be updated every two minutes during library opening times. Refresh your browser for the latest picture.

The library first opened in 1959, based at Wayland Hall. It then moved to its present location in The Old Courthouse, George Trollope Road in July 1973.

Today it offers a wide range of items for leisure, learning, literature and IT skills.

Computers have brought a huge change to the way people use the library. Gone are the days of the little brown tickets.

The computerised system means readers have instant access to what they have on loan and the books they want. They are also now able access the library site and order books and renew books online at home.

The staff are also proud of the new Learning Station at the library. It has 19 computers and people come in for lots of different IT courses. They then come to top up what they've learned using the computers in the library.

A hot drinks machine has also been installed so students who are doing classes can take a screen break and enjoy a cuppa.

It's quite a team at the library. Sue Holt is now Watton Librarian having previously been based at Dereham and Thetford. Val's time at the library is into double figures, and there's Sue M. and Natalie - both quite new girls on the team.

They also have Sue P. (yes three Sues!), Tony who drives the mobile van visiting hospitals and homes in the area and and Carole who is the administration assistant, phew quite a bunch!

There are more than 3,000 users registered at Watton library, but people can use their cards at any of the county's libraries.

Membership is free and users may have up to eight books on loan at any one time. Once registered, members may use any branch of the Norfolk Library Service and books, CDs, audiocassettes and videos may be borrowed and returned to different libraries.
