In Phoenix Nights, the Bolton-based comedian appears
as Jerry St Clair, the host at the working men's club where the
show is set.
In an echo of the programme, Dave met the show's
creator Peter Kay when he was compering the North West Comedian
of the Year.
Peter clinched the title in 1997 and started working
with Dave. The pair were drawn together by their similar style and
the fact they are both based in Bolton.
Dave Spikey is also a past winner of the North
West crown, which has previously been claimed by Caroline Aherne
and Steve Coogan.
Dave started his comedy career by writing sketches
for television, before tentatively joining the stand-up circuit.
But he didn't take up comedy full-time until 2000
when he gave up his job as chief biomedical officer in charge of
Royal Bolton Hospital's haematology unit.
