Cycle speedway is one of the more unusual sports around. Here, 12-year-old Jazz writes about how he got into speedway and how it takes him to places as far away as Arizona in the USA.

The cycle speedway season starts in April and runs until October.
Cycle speedway traces its origins back to the early post war years when motorcycle speedway was also enjoying a boom.
Post-war bomb sites which scarred many of our cities proved perfect venues for the sport.
England’s Dave Helmsley is the sport’s biggest Star – he is reigning World, European and British champion – he has won the latter title a record five times.
The sport’s biggest contest is the Ashes series against the “old enemy” Australia.
Cycle speedway is also big in Poland

I started doing speedway in 2000 at the age of eight. I didn't have my own bike, so I had to use the club's bikes for about a year.

My parents then bought me a bike from a friend so I started to race a bit more competitively.

Speedway involves four people racing around a track on a bike and you have to go round four times.

Firstly, I just did it for fun, but then I started competing in regional and national events. I began to take it seriously and in 2002 a lot of my hard work paid off.

I became the Norfolk Under 13s Champion. I was really pleased because I also won the Under 13s Norwich and District Grand Prix.

Hethersett Hawks

Normally I race on a regular basis for my club, Hethersett Hawks, in the B team, for Sunday league racing. There are around 30 people at the club, and their ages range from 6 to 50 years old.

Some have raced before, but many haven't, so it's a real mixture of levels.

I captained the Hethersett Hawks in the Under 13's British Team Championship into second place.

In 2003 I won the Under 13s Norfolk Championship and the Under 13s Norwich and District Grand Prix again so I was pleased that my speedway skills were improving.

Normally I do more than 20 races in the season - both national and local events.

Arizona

This Easter I went to Arizona to compete in the speedway in Arizona, USA. I raced with a team from England - one of whom was my friend Nick, 15, also from the Hethersett Hawks.

We raced over two days and we beat the Americans in both leagues - the Under 13s and the Under 16s.

I was really pleased with the way the racing went and that we came out on top. I couldn't wait to start the season this year because I really missed racing and competing. I always look forward to the season.
