Castle Acre Priory was founded in the
11th century by William de Warenne of France, having been inspired
by the Abbey of Cluny in Burgundy.
It dates from 1090 and survived until 1537
when it was surrendered to Henry VIII during the great Dissolution
of the Monasteries.
The ruins span seven centuries and include a 15th
century gatehouse, a 12th century church with an elaborate west
front, a prior's lodging still fit to be lived in, and his private
chapel.
The remains of the Castle Acre Castle lie on the
eastern side of the village and was the focal point of the Norfolk
estates of the Warenne Earls of Surrey. The
site is maintained by English Heritage.
