A feast of classical music, literature and theatre, is the promise of this year's King's Lynn festival as it celebrates Britain and Burney.

graphic: open quote marks. This year our 53rd Festival is an English celebration. Remembering the 400th anniversary of the death of Queen Elizabethen I, Regina Monologues, with Janet Suzman and Concordia brings together a programme of words.

We welcome back the Contemporary Consort for another of their increasingly popular concerts.

Our featured artists this year are the ConTempo String Quartet from Romania and BBC young Musician Guy Johnston who perform the great Schubert Quintet and music by Elgar.

A fanfare by the world-famous Black Dyke Band will launch King's Lynn Festival on Sunday 20 July, heralding two weeks of top quality entertainment.

The 53rd King's Lynn Festival is paying special tribute writer and composer Charles Burney former resident of King's Lynn and organist of St Margaret's Church.

The event also commemorates the 400th anniversary of the death of Queen Elizabeth I and pays tribute to other great British personalities, great British music and great British talents.

Big names taking part in the festival include the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Young Musician Guy Johnston, actress Janet Suzman, historian and broadcaster David Starkey and actress and author Jane Asher.

DIY opera

Following the success of last year's Gilbert and Sullivan from Scratch event, the team are back with The Pirates of Penzance.

Last year musical director Ian McMillan conducted a very lively performance of HMS Pinafore in which the audience became the chorus supporting soloists from the D'Oyly Carte and other leading opera companies.

Festival highlights

Charles Burney, the former organist at St Margaret's Church, will be celebrated in Burney and Friends featuring the baroque violinist Monica Huggett and the early music ensemble Sonnerie on July 23.

The programme, which will include the world's first piano concerto, will be recorded by BBC Radio 3.

Trumpets and Voice is the title of the concert on 24 July. The King's Lynn Festival Chorus teams up with the English Symphony Orchestra and guest soloist Crispian Steele-Perkins for a programme which will include Vivaldi's Gloria, Handel's Water Music and Handel's Hallelujah Chorus.

The spoken word

Renowned actress Janet Suzman will take the role of Elizabeth I in the Regina Monologues on 27 July and the next day the ConTempo String Quartet, who are in residence during the festival, will give the first of six morning coffee concerts each featuring rising stars in the classical music world.

Historian and broadcaster Dr David Starkey will visit the festival on 30 July to talk about his work which has been the subject of a number of books and television series.

Jane Asher has proved herself multi-talented as an established actress and writer. She will be talking about her life and work on Friday 1 August.

For all the family

In addition to the musical performances and guest speakers, the festival includes local walks and tours that explore the medieval history of King's Lynn.

Visitors to the festival can also take advantage of the many opportunities to enjoy the visual arts in a number of exhibitions running throughout the event.
