Amir Khan beat Steffy Bull in his 12th professional fight on Saturday, 7 April, 2007 - and has now turned his attention to British champion Jon Thaxton. The Bolton Olympic lightweight silver medallist has been tipped for professional titles since his impressive showing at Athens in 2004, and he has the Norwich man in his sights. "I would love to fight somebody like Thaxton," he said. "He is the kind of fighter who is made for me because I would be able to pick him off with my hand-speed and stay away from his big bombs," he added. Thaxton, 32, claimed the British title from Lee Meager in December, and defended the crown against Scott Lawton at the Norfolk Showground in March. After 14 years as a professional, Thaxton believes he has too much experience for Khan. "The kid has world class written all over him, but boxing's about timing," he said. "It will be speed and youth against strength and experience, and in my opinion, I would go for strength and experience every time," he added.

Thaxton said he'd relish the chance to take on Khan, especially since his recent comments, which have given him extra drive in his training. "It's making me mad, I thrive on it, remember Lee Meager saying he was going to put me in retirement? "He hasn't been in the gym since," he said. Thaxton thinks Khan may have under-estimated him, having made reference to his unsuccessful British light-welterweight title fight against Ricky Hatton in 2000. Jono says things are very different now. "That was seven years ago, I've changed a lot since then, I'm a lot better, a lot more experienced. If we ever fought I would relish it," he said. "My one bit of advice to Amir Khan is be patient, be humble, and respect other fighters," he added. A title fight of some sort looks on the cards, with Khan's promoter Frank Warren all but confirming it after the recent fight in Cardiff. "Amir will have a title fight in July, but I don't know which. It's very difficult to see how you can hold him back," said Warren. |
