Theatre & Dance

David Bedella as Frank 'N' Furter
Swinging transvestite Frank 'N' Furter

Review: The Rocky Horror Show

The timeless cult musical, created by Richard O'Brien, opened to a packed house featuring suspender-wearing and corset-clad fans. The show runs at the Norwich Theatre Royal until Saturday, 17 March, 2007.

This touring Rocky Horror Show is a sizzling, no holds barred, new production of Richard O'Brien's cult transsexual extravaganza.

It hits the ground running with barely a let up from the moment the familiar chords of the Timewarp rock the auditorium, to the final tragic scenes which lead us on to a brave new world.

Strong cast

The Olivier award-winning David Bedella stars as the gorgeous and outrageous Frank 'N' Furter, camping it up like a proverbial row of tents.

It's good to see local man Richard Meek back (last seen here just a few months ago in Joseph) in the role of squeeky-clean Brad, and Matt Harrop shines as manservant (or so we think) Riff-Raff.

Sergio Priftis, as the bronzed and muscled Rocky, provides the eye-candy. He's not short of many appreciative wolf whistles!

Dressed for the occasion

Get those basques and fishnets to the ready if you're headed to the Theatre Royal, because those not dressed up will feel quite inadequate.

The fan website strongly advises against going straight - but don't let the dressing up put you off  - this is a theatrical experience not to be missed not matter what you're wearing.

On approaching the Theatre Royal a buttock-flaunting French maid shimmied into view. She was followed by a gold loin cloth clad Rocky and a man balancing precariously on high heels.

Audience participation

In a pantoesque style, Rocky is one show where the audience really gets to stamp their mark on the night.

When Janet and Brad find themselves stranded in the badlands someone in the stalls hollered 'Welcome to Norfolk'.

Former Dad's Army star Ian Lavender as the narrator returns every heckle with style, even taking a shout of 'Stupid boy' in good humour.

In short - a riotous evening out with with a delicious mix of shockingly naughty bits and head-bopping songs. Deliciously rude.

The Rocky Horror Show runs at the Norwich Theatre Royal until Saturday, 17 March, 2007. Call 01603 630000 for more details.

The national tour continues until July 2007.
