Norfolk Bands

All Mighty Whispers.
All Mighty Whispers

US TV's Desire for Norfolk band

by Zoe Applegate
The bright lights of Los Angeles have beckoned for an unsigned Norwich band, who are about to have their music aired to an American audience. A song by All Mighty Whispers is being featured in a TV show, made for a new 20th Century Fox channel.

Norwich band All Mighty Whispers are about to receive a Stateside boost to their fanbase.

20th Television - owned by the world famous 20th Century Fox corporation - is to use one of the band's songs in its new show, Desire, about to be aired in America.

While the TV cast have been impeccably groomed to Los Angeles standards, the soundtrack to one of the episodes will boast a song penned in Norwich.

The corporation's list of programme credits includes The Simpsons, Ally McBeal and 24 - with Desire one of its latest and most innovative offerings.

It is an attempt by station bosses to adapt the popular Latin American 'telenovela' or storybook-style serial for an English-speaking audience.

TV station launch

The glossy show will hit TV screens in America on 5 September for the launch of Fox's new station, MyNetworkTV.

Songs by All Mighty Whispers have been used on more than 50 podcasts put together by US radio stations, and guitarist Alick Letort believes this is how their track, Heaven Have Me Now, was picked up.

When Alick, singer Peter Hill and drummer Steve Necchi first received an e-mail from 20th Television saying it wanted to use the tune on a show, they were cynical about it making it onto the final edit.

"We said yes, and thought it must be one song out of 200 and we were thinking they might not use it," said Alick.

The trio, however, then heard it was definitely being featured and had to sign on the dotted line of three contracts.

They had to give their permission for the song to be included on the show's soundtrack, as well as on a possible CD compilation and a DVD.

"We had to send the contracts back to the address of Avenue Of The Stars from our little set-up," said Alick, from Horsham St Faith.

Deserved success

While the band seem surprised that their song has been picked, 20th Television music supervisor Oliver Williams said their success is deserved.

"The track was chosen because it's a really good song and it fit within the sound we are looking for the show," he said.

Although the three-piece already have a European distribution deal for their album, Love Revolution - which was released earlier this year - they are now hoping their LP may be signed up for America.

Music acknowledged

"For us it's great that it's 20th Century Fox," said Alick. "It's another step and it's nice that these people are acknowledging that we're good.

"I don't know if they know that we're unsigned, but it will help to put Norfolk on the map," he added.

For the moment the band seem to need little outside help in promoting their material, as they harness the networking powers of the internet.

"Most of our stuff comes from the website. We were recently featured on a TV show in France after I contacted the presenter through the internet and he recommended our album at the end of his show," said Alick.

"I've also had to up the bandwidth for our website as we're getting so many hits from America."

And more internet traffic could be on its way after Desire goes to air on 5 September - a notable date on the trio's calendar.

"Steve is going over to America and will be there on 5 September when the series is launched so he's going to see if he can watch it," said Alick.

But depending on the show's success in the US, the band and their fans may not have to cross the Atlantic to hear the song on TV.

If Desire is a hit with its home audience, it may be sold overseas.
