Time And Tide: Norfolk's Coastline Revealed

The Norfolk coast holds a fascinating history, is a destination for thousands of tourist and is home to hundreds of species of wildlife. Get closer to the coast in an exhibition at the Time And Tide Museum until Sunday 2 July, 2006.

Following the BBC's acclaimed television series Coast, Great Yarmouth Museums take a closer look at the special qualities of the Norfolk coastline in a temporary exhibition at the Time And Tide Museum.

The exhibition reveals how early historians were at the forefront of national conservation movements and it explores the natural habitats to be found along the coastline which are home to a large number of communities.

It also looks at our shifting coastline, how we are facing the challenges that it brings and the questions raised regarding the future for the Norfolk coast.

"The Coast exhibition is the fourth in a programme of six temporary exhibitions at Time And Tide," said James Steward, the maritime development officer with Norfolk Museums and Archaeology Service.

"By developing this type of exhibition Great Yarmouth Museums are demonstrating a clear commitment to the social agenda in museums, in particularly to reaching the wider community and improving access to knowledge and information," he added.

The exhibition has worked closely with many people living and working on the Norfolk coast.

"Relevant, themed, temporary exhibitions that work closely with local community organisations as well as national partners are helping to establish Time And Tide as a Gateway Museum in the Eastern region and Great Yarmouth itself as a centre of excellence in maritime heritage," said James Steward.

The BBC has also contributed a number of elements to the exhibition, including highlights from the epic series Coast, which includes aerial footage of the Norfolk coastline and timelapse photography recorded on Scolt Head Island at sunrise.

"It's partnerships like these with important regional museums that make BBC Coast what it is. We're really pleased to be involved with the exhibition," said series producer Steve Evanson.

"We're delighted that through BBC Coast and exhibitions like this at Time And Tide that we as a nation are learning to appreciate the fascinating coastline we have," he added.

Whilst in Great Yarmouth it is hoped visitors will also enjoy a walk around the town with the BBC's mobile experience, created as one of 12 interactive walks on the UK coastline as part of BBC Coast.

COAST: Norfolk's Coastline Revealed runs at the Time And Tide Museum until Sunday 2 July, 2006.
