There was an excellent turnout at the Ferry Boat Inn for a Thursday night billing of Adrenochrome and local faves Kunk. The audience was varied ranging from 18 to 40-year-olds and the crowding meant it was very hot with only one fan at the front not doing much in the way of cooling people down! Ferry Boat debut This was Adrenochrome’s first gig at the King Street venue and only their second gig in total, so this was going to be intriguing!

Checking out this youthful-looking band, it's plain to hear the members are influenced by a range of music, from funk to punk. Their heavy rock and metal sound was fused with funky bass lines, resembling Pearl Jam and Metallica. Set highlight This band provided a short but satisfying set which included a mind-blowing cover, Beating Heart Baby, from one of my favourite bands at the moment, Head Automatica, which was the highlight of their set. They put so much effort and power into that track, sadly more than went into their own songs. Tracks were dedicated to certain people in the crowd which engaged the audience with those in question answering back. As a result, this friendliness helped the band pull support from the crowd. When one of the vocalists light-heartedly apologised for his singing people shouted back words of encouragement and told him to 'Be confident!' If Adrenochrome keep working on new songs and concentrate on those rather than covers, they will progress into an inspiring live band. I hope this band continues to be creative and experimental - one of the highlights was Raoul Duke which uses samples from the film Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas to impressive effect. More of this please - good work, guys! Kunk Next up was Kunk, an alternative rock band with a fresh line-up consisting of original members, brothers Wayne and James Davey, with new musicians Hannah Veale on bass and Will Marshall on drums.

I saw this band last year and I have to admit I wasn’t too keen, but watching them again my opinion has changed. This is a band you need to see a few times before you can fully appreciate them. Sounding similar to Queens Of The Stone Age and The Foo Fighters, Kunk have some decent material and they look good too! Their songs match their image: pop-fuelled rock mixed with a dash of punk which forces you to tap your toes and nod your head. The standout track for me was Claustrophobic Me, which was a powerful, upbeat song punctuated with great live vocals. Energetic set Kunk put lots of energy and enthusiasm into their performance, maintaining eye contact with the audience throughout. It was clear by the quality of their set that Kunk are a well-honed band who have played plenty of gigs. They were at ease on stage: they spoke to the audience throughout their set, adding a bit of humour. Introductions to each song provoked cheers and hollers from the crowd and the set went down a treat. I'm sure this band will continue until they get what they want and I, for one, am excited about their future. This band is going to go far, so catch them while you can!
