Keith's broadcasting career spans more than 40 years and reads like a who's who of radio history. He is the only broadcaster in the world to have worked with Forces Radio, the pirates, Radio Luxembourg, Independent Local Radio and then for many years at aunty Beeb, in national, regional and local radio. ![]() Keith Skues Worldwide starKeith was born in Timperley, Cheshire and began his broadcasting career with British Forces Network in Germany in 1958 whilst serving in the Royal Air Force. His tours with BFN have taken him all over the world, including three years in Kenya, East Africa. Returning to the UK in 1964, Keith became a "pirate" broadcasting on the high seas off the south coast aboard Radio Caroline. He later joined "Big L", Radio London and was in the opening line-up for BBC Radio 1. Keith was the second DJ to broadcast on the new network on its opening day, 30 September 1967 and has held various posts with the BBC including editor of the award-winning series The Story Of Pop on Radio 1. Management knocked on Keith's door in 1974 and he was appointed programme director at Radio Hallam in Sheffield, where he remained until he took over the late night programme slot on BBC Radio in the Eastern Counties in April 1995. After 10 years of burning the midnight oil into the early hours of night-time radio, Keith came up with a cunning plan - to present his show from his home, rather than drive into the studios of the BBC. After all, Skues Towers is also the location of one of the biggest record libraries in the country - around 250,000 at the last count! So now he spins the records to the rest of the Eastern Counties from the comfort of his own home. If there's a break in transmission, he's probably nipped off to put the kettle on! Pop goes SkuesIn addition to his broadcasting career, Keith has written six books. Pop Went The Pirates, his most recent, became a best-seller in Eastern Counties. Keith is a Freeman of the City of London and a squadron leader in the Royal Air Force Reserve, he also holds a private pilots licence. last updated: 22/09/07 SEE ALSOYou are in: Norfolk > Local Radio > Radio Norfolk presenters > Keith Skues |
