Music Reviews

Lemmy from Motorhead.
Lemmy still living it loud

Motorhead review

Another year and another circuit of Motorhead gigs - but could it be the last? Lee Allen packed his ear plugs and went to the UEA to see if Lemmy and the boys are really going to hang up the guitars, retire to the country and take up golf!

There is something special about Motorhead gigs: I haven't decided if it’s the devotion of their fans, the ludicrous volume they play at or if it’s like stepping back in time and partying with Vikings.

Lee Allen gives Motorhead five out of five stars.

Whatever it is, this gig was always going to be fun - but to add veterans of the Brazilian music scene Sepultura to the bill upped the ante.

Sepultura

Arriving on stage to a hero's welcome, Sepultura didn't waste any time heading straight into Apes Of God. Sepultura don't exactly play music, rather they destroy it with a sound that is utterly brutal.

They're now in their 20th year and the band continue to unleash song after song of carnage.

In Norwich they turned the first 15 rows of the crowd into a sea of flying bodies as they ran through old classics like Escape To The Void and Troops Of Doom.

Sepultura's Derrick Green.
Sepultura's Derrick Green gets red mist

Singer Derrick Green, who replaced Max Cavalera (now of Soulfly) has the voice of Freddy Kruger and the stage presence of a man possessed. Next to him stood guitarist Andreas Kisser who was a blur of hair and shredding riffs.

The last three songs were the highlight: a back to back salvo of Territory, Arise and Roots. These were exercises in power and ferocity.

It’s rare to see this much energy and aggression from any band, not least the support and on a Monday too!

Motorhead

Most bands would retreat in terror at having to follow a set like Sepultura's, but little seems to faze front man Lemmy.

This man sold his soul to the devil to play rock 'n' roll and it’s a good job too because the world is a better place with him around.

With Filthy Phil Campbell on guitar and Mikkey Dee on drums, the trio led their troops through 90 minutes of the dirtiest rock 'n' roll imaginable - all played with amps turned up to 11.

Classics like Metropolis, Going To Brazil and Over The Top were dispatched at break-neck speed. In between songs Lemmy was chatty and asked the crowd if they preferred hip-hop to rock. You can imagine the response.

Charging through the set, the biggest surprise was the encore when Motorhead walked back onto the stage with acoustic guitars.

For one song we had Motorhead unplugged - playing the blues with Lemmy singing and playing mouth organ. Maybe when the Jack Daniels swigging gets too much there is a career for them playing the blues in seedy little bars.

Finally, they closed their set with the magnificent Ace Of Spades and Overkill, leaving their fans to spill out into the cold night air.

If Motorhead do tour again then I urge everyone to go along for the full rock experience - it must be the closest thing to going to a gig in Middle Earth.

Motorhead and Sepultura played the UEA in Norwich on Monday 22 November 2004.

Funny just found out this comment whilst surfing the net, been to 4 Motorhead concerts this year and they are still going good and strong. So its now 2006 and they are better than ever. Cant wait for 2007 tour list to come out. Think you were wrong Lee.

Saw em in Ventura, CA. They freakin' ROCKED. It was my 3rd time seeing them live. I'll go every time they're in town!

Greg (Ystrad Rhondda)
Saw the Motorhead/ Sepultura gig in Newport 2004.Always a good show, Sep. were brilliant. Motorhead should now sing other virtually unheard classics such as "I am the Sword" off the "Bastards" album. There are many others of course. Unfortunately they did not play the best song on "Inferno" - Smiling Like A Killer!

JAMES
IT CANNOT BE DENIED MOTORHEAD ARE "METAL" AND WILL ALWAYS BE KNOWN AS A BAND WHOM ALWAYS ROCKED A A A STRAIGHT A'S!! MOTORHEAD ARE SPECIAL.

stan

Sorry for trespassing but here's my 2 cents on the concert in Copenhagen, Denmark on the 12th of December 2004: IT WAS LOUD! And it was good, too. The mix of Sepultura and Motorhead was a fine combo and my son and I drove back home afterwards totally exhausted. So much rockn'roll in so little time! Next concerts up are Megadeth here on 12th of February and then comes mighty Judas Priest in March. Can't wait... Just my two cents Best regards Sĝren Tikkanen, Denmark

"Just a little louder... Please? lol" After the 1st song we were all so deaf we couldn't hear!

I wasn't actually at the same gig, but at the Manchester Apollo, sounds like we got a bit of a better package with 2 support acts (Class Of Zero as well as Sepultura) and then Motorhead. Can't remember them doing going to Brazil live, but such other greats as no class and killed by death were in there set that night. They also did two acoustic songs before the Ace Of Spades and Overkill, an amazing gig. The bit that made the gig all worthwhile was being at it with someone who had seen Motorhead in their hit parade prime, who said it was a better performance. I thought Motorhead were an ordinary rock band, then I picked up Lemmy's autobiography and my mind was blown away with the passionate way this once messed up kid had gone to make speed metal. See these boys, they may not be around for much longer so see 'em while they are.

Des Boyle
This was the first time I saw Motorhead live and I have to say they blew me away. They have it all... songs, attitude and charisma! They really put others in the shade!

Terry Lench
See then every year this time at Sutton Guildhall. Shame the venue can't handle the noise, but as usual Motorhead ruled the stage. I don't think they'll ever retire - the world would be worse off.

Henrik
Great!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Reinaldo Viana Aguieiras
Motorhead are the biggest rock 'n' roll band in the world. Lemmy, Mr Rock 'n' Roll himself, proved one more time that age (he is almost 60)does not matter. I hope Motorhead get louder and louder. Long live Lemmy & Motorhead.See you guys in Brazil.

Josue
Sepultura and Motorhead playing together is a dream!

Shaun
Saw Lemmy and co at Manchester after too many years of not seeing them (but listening to all the new stuff of course) and they are still the loudest, dirtiest and best band going. Whorehouse Blues was tasty. Cheers for a great night. PS. Hope the idiot who threw the cup got snaggletoothed!

Josephine
Motorhead ruled the place but their choice of support acts was high class. Class Of Zero should be checked out by anyone into this music as they rocked the place right from the start. Amazing since the first acts are usually pretty damn c***!

Steveclem,Essex.
Having seen Motorhead before, thought i,d let my girlfriend experience Lemmy and the boys.I didn,t book the tickets til last minute so i ended up in row Z up on the balcony at Hammersmith.Motorhead never fail to deliver, even so far at the back they sounded great.Thought Dr Rock was a strange song to start the set with, its not one of their best. However what classics they performed,Sacrifice,Just cos youve got the power and to end on the best Head song ever,Overkill. This being the Heads last tour? Not a chance, whilst Lemmys still got breath there will always be Motorhead.

Ronny
Saw both bands together in Magdeburg/Germany. They did an incredible performence of Orgasmatron together. It was great!

Marie-France
Motorhead rules! These guys are very nice and they have a lot of respect for their fans. If it's was their last tour, they would have say it. We are still waiting for them in Montreal! Again and again...

Chris
YES! MOTORHEAD ROCKZ. I went 2 tha newport gig in 2004, an it blew my head off. theze guyz r awesome.

Pete
Motorhead don't play for critics, they play for their loyal fans. This is a good forum for fans not critics. I'm sure that phil campbell doesn't like to be referred to as filthy, that would be philthy animal taylor, who is not in the band anymore. Although the review was good, anybody in their right mind would never say anything bad about a Motorhead show. They are in a league of their own. Greatest live band ever. Once you've seen them. You will need more!

Mark Shaw
Loud enough? Never! Loudest gig for me was Newport, by far. These guys wipe the floor with most bands - they're so tight, extremely loud & they'll batter your senses at every given opportunity! Go see 'em!

stephen page
my brother and i saw motorhead at hammersmith [first record i ever bought no sleep till hammersmith in 1980 still blows me away] we are motorhead fans and we listen to rock and roll

John Copeland
The reviewer is ignorant. Motorhead have never announced a tour to be their last and Phil Campbell has never been referred to as "filthy". That was ex drummer "Philthy Animal Taylor". Get your facts right please.

YENZ
I am going to lemmy and the guys in copenhagen sunday 12-12 and in malmoe 13-12. my concert number 14 and 15 with king lemmy

Pete Gross
I flew from Miami, Florida to Amsterdam to see Motorhead at the Heinekin Music Hall on Nov. 29th. I would fly to the Moon to see them again. They are Motorhead and they ARE ROCK N ROLL!

Jana
I flew over from Prague to see Motorhead and Sepultura in Birmingham and London. In fact I saw Motorhead in Trutnov Open Air this summer, which was quite a treat since they started atsomething like 1am! But to see two giants play together: I simply had to do it again. Birmingham was a bit violent to me (erm, I ended up in mosh pit by coincidence, which is not exactly activity for my age-group :-) But anyway, Birmingham was great and I liked Sepultura slightly better there compared to London Hammersmith. But again it may have been due to distracting upper circle seating area, which I kind of hated! On the other hand, the sound of Motorhead up there was magnificent. I shall not forget to mention that by going to those two gigs, I discovered Class of Zero - a very nice surprise! So it is Christmas soon, period of very special treats, and for that reason I am heading off to Dresden tomorrow to see Sepultura and Motorhead one more time. PS. Yes, Motorhead were loud enough for me.

Jen, Manchester
Motörhead - Manchester - Magnificent! Anyone who hasn't seen Motörhead live just hasn't lived. Take it from one who now knows! They can't be giving up touring. I've got to see them again! Tell me it isn't true Lemmy!

Steve
I flew over from Belfast for the shows in Liverpool and Manchester. Sepultura are without a doubt one of thee greatest metal bands I have ever had the pleasure of seeing. Lets hope they make it back over here in the near future.

Overkill (B.)
Motörhead Forever!

Chris
My Sepultura CD's are in the trash since this gig. Motorhead have sold a few of the back and new catalog since. Sorry Sep, but next to Motorhead you were weak. Very boring.

SEPULTURA^FAN
Sepultura is great and best metal band on the world guys!!! SEPULTURA RULEZ!!!

Leo Trenhago
Sepultura is a great band! Derick is good, Max is perpetual!

kevis

Tim Ridley

Rafaela-Brasil
They still freakin me out!!! Sepultura and Motorhead, the same night...Anything else to say!

Phil
I went to see them in Newcastle....been a 'head' fan since 1978, and they just kick your arse...top draw, a must for true rock fans!

James Mcinnerny
Saw them 2 nights ago and still can't hear a thing for the ringing. Long may they rock.

Sean
Class Of Zero. SEPULTURA RULE!

digger belfield
the loudest and best band in the world without compare. No compromise throughout he history of the band. Lemmy is a god.

James Young - Birmingham
A great night. The Motorhead gig , classic stage lights, amps on eleven, the immortal words "we are Motorhead, we are a rock n roll band" that set the attitude right off. A couple of thousand Birmingham ears went home happily buzzing. Next time they're about go and see them. Clinical rock n roll no bs. See you there.

Peter White
Absolutley spot on with the review. I too thoroughly urge anyone even MILDLY interested in Motorhead to go see them -you'll be left transformed. Who were the band that were on before Sepultura? 'Glass Of... something...'
