The
great outdoors comes alive this month with a production of
Romeo and Juliet by the Norwich Young People's Theatre.
The
classic tragedy will be performed in the surroundings of Norwich
Cathedral and later in the open-air amphitheatre at The Forum.
Romeo
and Juliet (played by Basil Curtis and Amy McLachlan-Sayer)
come from opposing families and their love must be concealed
until after their marriage.
However,
Romeo has been banished for avenging the death of Mercutio
and, despite the well-meaning intervention of Friar Laurence,
fate ensures their wedding never takes place.
"It
is several firsts for Norwich Young People's Theatre. The
students will be performing the action in promenade style
- taking the audience on a journey through the cathedral,"
said director Peter Beck.
"Promenade
is used very little in the theatre because it is very challenging
for both actor and audience.
"It's
a very different setting too - at the cathedral they will
need to be in character for the entire evening," he added.
The
group is one of the first to use the amphitheatre outside
The Forum which was built last summer.
Romeo
and Juliet will be on at Norwich Cathedral from Thursday 19-21
May at 7.30pm. For tickets call 01603 629921.
The
performance at The Forum's amphitheatre on Sunday 22 May at
2.30pm is free. Take a picnic and blanket!
