Gerry Schum project

Ready To Shoot is a major exhibition, based on concepts by film artist Gerry Shum, that has inspired a unique video project for three Norwich-based schools.

Ready To Shoot is a major touring exhibition based on video art from original concepts by Gerry Schum. It represents the work from a number of artists with whom Schum was associated in the late '60s and early '70s.

Schum, along with Ursula Wevers, founded the first gallery devoted exclusively to the production of art that existed only on television.

When Ready To Shoot arrived at the Norwich Gallery, the only UK stop on the exhibition's international tour, students from Costessey, Heartsease and Earlham High Schools were set the challenge of using a television as their gallery.

Creating video art

In partnership with the gallery, the support of the Norwich School of Art and Design (NSAD), BBC Voices and Aimhigher - the three schools had to develop a series of video shorts inspired by the works within the exhibition.

"The purpose of the Gerry Schum project from our perspective, was to enable the young people to engage in a creative project with the aim of raising their aspirations, self-confidence as well as an awareness of higher education," said Kelda Hargreaves, a co-ordinator with Aimhigher.

"Each school group worked closely with a dedicated NSAD student and this enabled them to build a relationship with that student and gain some insight into their experiences of studying at a higher level," she added.

Making a film

Filming took place around Norwich city centre, with lots of opportunities for the pupils from the three schools to get to know each another.

Editing took place a week later at the BBC Voices centre in The Forum.

"Young people see images on the TV and at the cinema all the time but being involved in the creative process, to learn about filming, directing and editing itself, is another matter," said Gary Standley of BBC Voices.

The completed films are a real achievement and accurately reflect the works in the Ready To Shoot exhibition.

"The end results have really captured the spirit of the exhibition," said Kelda Hargreaves.

"The project has given young people an opportunity to learn more about their own abilities, as well as their future options. They should be very proud of what their hard work has accomplished," she added.
