Want to join the circus?

Ever wanted to become a dance superstar or even try synchronised swimming? Now's your chance with the start of new courses in Great Yarmouth.

The Hippodrome Dance Company is giving young people in Norfolk the chance to get involved in the dynamic world of showbiz.

Based at the historic Hippodrome Circus in Great Yarmouth, the company are running a series of new and exciting courses starting in September 2003.

These courses give young people a chance to learn new and unusual performance skills in an exciting way, working with professional teachers in the exciting atmosphere of a live circus venue.

Special classes will also be avaliable including costume and make-up, stage design and the technical side of showbiz.

Twice a term, pupils aged seven and above, will have a circus skills workshop where they will be taught everything from juggling to pyramid building and acrobatics. For those who really get bitten by the bug, master classes in aerial skills will also be available.

The pupils taking part on the dance course will be taught specific techniques and routines in all styles of jazz, tap and funky dance. Students will be also given the opportunity to achive grades, medals and certificates.

Estelle Clifton, the tutor on the dance courses, has had lots of experience in the entertainments business.

After she gained her teaching qualification, Estelle went on to dance in many theatre shows including the Royal Variety Performance.

"I really want to pass on all the training and experience that I have had," she said.

"I hope the young people who take part in the course will gain a wide knowledge of the entertainment business.

"What better experience of the circus can you have than performing in it," Estelle added.

For those aged over 14, there's also the opportunity to develop synchronised swimming skills.

The Water Spectacular forms an important part of the daily show at the Hippodrome. The sinking water feature was restored to working order by Peter Jay in 1981, two years after he took over the Hippodrome.

The ring, which transforms into a pool holding 70,000 gallons of water, is just one of three circus water spectacles left in the world.
