Winning Weather

Sarah-Leigh BarnettSarah-Leigh Barnett

Sarah-Leigh Barnett was one of two winners in the 2003 search for weather presenters in the English regions. After her initial 6 month contract Sarah-Leigh was awarded an additional nine months work as a weather presenter/reporter for BBC East Midlands Today. Sarah has kept in touch with the station and since then has been running some of their studio tours.

Now Sarah-Leigh is back with the weather team and is presenting some of the early morning radio weather bulletins for BBC East Midlands. She has also been asked to catch up with the TV weather charts, which have changed format since she last presented on TV. You can also catch her in action during some lunchtime weather bulletins.

Q1. How did you feel winning the New Talent scheme?

I just loved every day I went to the BBC and every bit of work I was doing.

Q2. How did you find out you had won?

I was just totally gobsmacked, I felt like all my Christmas's had come at once.

Q3. What were you doing on a typical day?

In a typical morning shift I was in the studio by quarter to six in the morning...

Q4. What was it like presenting your first forecasts?

I hadn't really realised what it was like to present to camera and I hadn't realised weather presenters don't have an autocue.

Q5. How easy is it being 'natural' in front of the camera?

I know I can do it eventually and I can let my character shine through...
