Nick Mackie - part two
Life after 'Hobbies'
My latest short 'Cold Calling' is doing the festival circuit at the moment, and elements of this where used in a recent BBC Three
Animation pilot show. Recently Pete Avery, Miki Cash and myself have been creating a new animation pilot called 'Cockney Coppers'.
We should have this animation short finished mid September.
What effect did winning the New Talent scheme have for you?
For me winning New Talent came at exactly the right time as I had just started a new small animation company called 'Shufti'. The
scheme gave us the opportunity to make six new Hobbies for BBC Three and gave Shufti some much-needed publicity. Its always great
putting BBC New Talent winner on the CV. I canít thank the BBC enough for running the scheme - long may it continue.
How do you make your animation stand out?
Originality and quality. Also make the film you really want to make, not something that you think may impress someone else. Animation
takes so long you may as well spend your time making the film you want to make. Also anyone you may want to impress probably won't
give a fig anyway.
One thing you wish you'd known when you started out?
Watching animation is more fun than making the stuff most of the time. Be aware that the industry is full of many big and fragile
egos that will happily stab you in the back. Getting off of your ass and making your own films raises your profile and I wish I had
started making my own films earlier in life.
