How do scientists detect new planets?

NASA's powerful Kepler telescope has discovered 715 new planets beyond our Solar System.

Scientists still have more data from the telescope left to examine and it's hoped more exciting discoveries will be made.

But how do scientists detect new planets and how can we spot planets at home?
