Cooking with insects: Stefan Gates' mealworm pasta recipe

Stefan tells us his recipe for mealworm Bolognese

With the United Nations saying we should all be eating more insects, we asked food expert Stefan Gates to come up with a recipe especially for Newsround!

Stefan's the presenter of CBBC series 'Incredible Edibles'.

He's a big fan of bugs, telling Newsround that "insects are a fantastic source of protein and they can taste fantastic".

Follow the recipe below to make Stefan's mealworm Bolognese.

But make sure you have a grown-up on hand to help!

Stefan Gates's Mealworm Bolognese

Ingredients

400g of freeze-dried mealworms

A little sunflower oil

1 onion

A garlic clove

A tin of chopped tomatoes

200ml of vegetable stock

A pinch of mixed herbs

Method

Pour your freeze dried mealworms into a food processor and whizz until they are mashed together.

Heat a little oil in a frying pan and add the chopped onion, garlic and mealworms.

Gently fry them for five to ten minutes.

Add a tin of chopped tomatoes, the mixed herbs and the vegetable stock and simmer for half an hour.

Add the bolognese sauce to some cooked pasta and enjoy!
