Why is the flooding so bad in parts of England and Wales?
- 26 November 2012
There has been widespread flooding across the UK in the last week but why has it been so bad?
There was a drought earlier in the year, where there was very little rain - so the ground became very dry.
Then, this summer was the wettest in 100 years. The ground soaked up all the rain and the river levels went up.
When the rain came last week the ground was already full of water so the rain had nowhere to drain away so it flowed over the land causing flooding.
The south west area of England was the worst affected but Scotland and Wales also had bad weather.
The water wasn't the only problem, strong winds blew power lines down and left lots of people without electricity.
Although the forecast is for the rain to lessen this week there could still be more flooding.
