Families can't afford to go on summer day trips

Most kids across the country are enjoying, or looking forward to their long summer holidays.

But according to the charity, Family Action, a lot of children will be spending their summer "stuck at home".

That's because more and more families are having to cut back on trips out because they can longer afford to go them.

Family Action says standard activities are too expensive for many, with a day out costing £80.

A poll of over 2000 mums showed that more than half planned to cut back on trips because of money worries.

Three of the biggest problems were the cost of entry fees to attractions, transport and the price of eating out.

The charity has asked companies to improve offers for families all year round.

Family Action Chief Executive Helen Dent said: "We know that children get a boost from days out. However, this year many parents are so worried that summer day trips will break the bank that they're cutting back."

"Even though times are tough, and most of us have less to spend this summer compared to last year, there are still things that we can do, that cost next to nothing, like bike rides, walks, days at the seaside, and even things like a barbecue in our very own back gardens!"

Keerthi, Hull, England

"My local swimming pool does free swimming for under 16's in the summer, I'm going as much as I can. "

Helene, Hampshire, England

"Going for walks in the woods is fun, educational and free."

Niamh, Ireland

"I think that the price of activities and holidays are unfair because everyone should be able to enjoy themselves. It shouldn't be about paying, it should be about having fun and spending time with your families."

Lottie, Hertford, England

"A good day to the beach is great fun and cheap!! Instead of fish and chips out - take a homemade picnic!!!"

Sophie, Southampton, England

"My mum and dad are cutting back a little but we still have fun. Camping, going to the beach, playing in the park and going on nature trails costs little and is fun. Since it's the summer and tourists are coming over to the UK, everything is more expensive now."

Laura, Scotland

"If you have a pet dog, you can build a homemade agility course with tunnels, jumps etc. this is great fun for both owner and dog! You can also invite friends round with their dogs and have a mini competition!"

Emily, Wolverhampton, England

"I love to camp outside in my garden, build dens inside or out or go on bike rides with my friends."

Grace, Longridge, England

"You shouldn't need to spend a lot when you go out in the summer. What my family are going to do a lot of is go to the beach, the only cost there is petrol and maybe a few pounds for an ice cream. Which is cheap as chips!"

Charlotte, Blackpool, England

"My mum is cutting back on days out but I just love going to the park."

Ellie, Staffordshire, England

"My mum and dad are not cutting back, but if they were I would go to my Nana's and camp out in her yard."

Jasmine, Doncaster, England

"It's not just because of cutbacks, it's because of the horrible weather that the UK is getting. It should be sunny not raining."

Harbir, Slough, England

"I go on my bike, play with friends, draw something outside, go to the park, go to the beach, go swimming, and lots more! If it is raining I watch TV, go on computer, draw, and play around!"

Bea, Kent, England

"My mum is cutting back a lot, but it's not her fault. You can still have fun at home playing games and going out with your mates. But I do miss going Pontins and places like that."

Ebony, Accrington, England

"I always stay at home. I've only been on holiday once and that was years ago."

Ben, England
