Schools shut as severe winds hit in Scotland

8 December 2011 Last updated at 18:25 GMT

Hundreds of schools across Scotland have been closed because of severe winds that have started battering the country.

The Western Isles have already been hit by gales, and the strongest gusts are forecast to reach Scotland's central belt at around Thursday lunchtime.

There's a strong chance winds of up to 90mph may damage buildings and cause big disruption to travel.

The Met Office has issued a red warning - the most serious one you can have.
