Why are more pets being abandoned?

Animal charities across the UK say they're seeing more and more people giving up their pets because they can't afford to look after them.

Cats and dogs can cost hundreds of pounds to care for, and worldwide money problems have forced some owners to think about getting rid of them.

Battersea Dogs and Cats home says the number of abandoned pets it's taking in has doubled over the past year.

Lots of the animals are pregnant or need expensive treatments at the vets.

Head vet Shaun Opperman said: "A lot of the animals coming in to us have conditions that make us think that they've been ignored for some time and that their owners can no longer get to grips with."
