John Kidney, Commmisioner of Irish Lights

Lightship

A bit of maritime history came to an end today, for more than two centuries a dozen lightships have warned of hidden dangers around the coast of Ireland

They are basically floating light houses anchored out at sea. Today off the County Down coast, near Portavogie, the very last Irish lightship, anchored off the South Rock, was decommissioned.

It's being replaced by an automated navigation buoy.

Our environment correspondent Mike McKimm was on board to see the last moments of this working ship.
