Missing Bees

Martin Cassidy

When I went looking for missing bees in the apple orchards of County Armagh, I got more than I bargained for.

It turns out that bees are not best pleased when a television camera is parked outside their hive.  The bees decided to muster their remaining number and give chase.

I thought I had lost them near the top of the orchard, but then I felt something crawling up my leg.  There was nothing else I could do but go behind the nearest tree and drop my jeans.

Luckily the bee, took the hint and took the brush off.  It always had the potential to a be a story with a sting in the tail.

On a more serious note there's a real scarcity of bees and worried local bee keepers are describing a mysterious condition that's actually leaving a lot of hives deserted.
