Former Strictly Come Dancing contestant Laila Rouass says she had to hide in a restaurant freezer as the attack in Barcelona was taking place.

At least 13 were killed and dozens injured after a man drove a van into crowds of people on the tourist street, Las Ramblas.

The actress, who's appeared in Holby City and Footballers' Wives, is on holiday in the city.

The 46-year-old recounted her ordeal on Twitter in a series of posts.

"In the middle of the attack," she wrote just after it had started.

"Hiding in a restaurant freezer. Happened so fast. Praying for the safety of everyone here."

Laila says she also heard gunshots while inside the restaurant near Las Ramblas.

Prime Minister Theresa May says she's "sickened" by the attack and the Foreign Office says it's still trying to find out if there were any British victims.

Any tourists in the city are being advised to stay away from Las Ramblas.

After leaving the restaurant, Laila shot footage of a police helicopter in the sky above the city.

Laila Rouass flew to Barcelona on Monday with her 10-year-old daughter Inez Khan for a short break.

The star hasn't posted any updates since Thursday evening.

She finished fourth on the seventh series of Strictly Come Dancing in 2009 with Anton Du Beke but made her name in 1990s ITV series, Footballers' Wives, in which she played Bollywood actress Amber Gates.
