The homeless man who was Miley Cyrus' date at this year's MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) has turned himself into police in Oregon.

After Jesse Helt accepted the singer's video of the year award it emerged there was a warrant out for his arrest.

Polk County Community Corrections Director said the 22-year-old had posted the $2,500 (£1,500) bail for a probation violation.

Helt is expected to appear in court in the coming weeks.

Court records show that Helt had previously pleaded guilty to misdemeanour criminal mischief and criminal trespass and was sentenced to 30 days in jail and probation.

The arrest warrant was issued in November 2011 after he violated the probation.

During his acceptance speech, Helt said he was accepting the award "on behalf of the 1.6 million runaways and homeless youth in the US who are starving, lost and scared for their lives".

He then asked the crowd to donate to Cyrus' fundraising campaign.

The 2014 MTV VMAs saw Beyonce taking home four awards including the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.

Ed Sheeran was also among the winners, picking up best video by a male artist for Sing. He beat off competition from Pharrell, Eminem and John Legend.
