Actor Columbus Short has confirmed he's leaving American TV show Scandal, which is shown on More 4 in the UK.

The 31-year-old, who plays Harrison Wright, is currently facing two criminal charges.

One relates to his wife and another involves an alleged fight in Los Angeles.

Ahead of the fourth series, a statement to Entertainment Weekly read: "I must confirm my exit from a show I've called home for 3 years."

"I have enjoyed every single minute of it. Everything must come to an end and unfortunately the time has come for Harrison Wright to exit the canvas."

Last month, Short was arrested on suspicion of battery with serious bodily harm after an altercation involving another man at a restaurant.

In February, he was charged with misdemeanour spousal battery.

A judge ordered him to stay away from his wife, Tanee McCall Short, at a court hearing. He has pleaded not guilty in that case.

She's filed for divorce after nearly nine years of marriage, citing irreconcilable differences and is seeking legal and physical custody of the couple's two-year-old daughter.

Scandal, starring Kerry Washington, has been a hit since it debuted in 2012. Short's character was involved in a cliff-hanger ending for the show's season three finale.
