A release date has been announced for a film based on the World of Warcraft video game franchise.

Production company Legendary Pictures says Warcraft will be released on 18 December 2015.

The film is described as "an epic adventure of world-colliding conflict" and will be distributed by Universal Pictures.

World of Warcraft has 7.7 million players worldwide, according to makers Activision Blizzard.

In a Facebook post, Legendary Pictures announced the film would be directed by Duncan Jones, the man behind Moon and Source Code.

Charles Leavitt, whose credits include Blood Diamond, will write the script.

Despite a fall in player numbers, World of Warcraft remains one of the most popular online games ever made.

Several novels, a comic book series and tabletop games based on the franchise have been released.

Legendary Pictures has produced films including 300 and The Dark Knight Trilogy.

Filming for Warcraft is expected to begin in January 2014.

No announcements have been made about casting, though reports have linked Colin Farrell to a lead role in the film.
