Hemel Hempstead voted the 'ugliest' town in Britain

Hemel Hempstead

Hemel Hempstead in Hertfordshire has been voted the "ugliest" town in Britain.

Completing the top three in the line-up are Luton in Bedfordshire and Slough in Berkshire.

All the places were chosen by the public for their unattractive architecture and unappealing town centres.

Other towns making it into the top 10 include Birmingham, Cumbernauld and Gateshead.

Top 10 'ugliest' towns in Britain

    • 1 - Hemel Hempstead
    • 2 - Luton
    • 3 - Slough
    • 4 - Bracknell
    • 5 - Birmingham
    • 6 - Camberley
    • 7 - Coventry
    • 8 - Cumbernauld
    • 9 - Hatfield
    • 10 - Gateshead

The poll was conducted by the authors of the Crap Towns books.

Previous winners of the title include Luton in 2004 and Kingston upon Hull in 2003. Liverpool, Glasgow and Bath have all featured on the lists.

Writers Sam Jordison and Dan Kieran are now on the search for Britain's "dullest" town.

"It could be a question of nightlife, or lack of it," they said. "It could be a question of shops, or lack of them. It could be a question of architecture, or lack of it.

"It could also be about the population, the council, the endless, endless roundabouts and traffic jams.

"It's hard to pinpoint exactly what makes things dull but we all know what dull feels like."

Choices on the shortlist include Maidenhead in Berkshire, Leamington Spa in Warwickshire and Rhyl in Denbighshire.

There are also plans to look for the "most improved" town.
