Sam Mendes

The latest James Bond film has won the top prize at the 2013 Empire Awards.

Skyfall scooped best film and best director for Sam Mendes, along with the Empire Inspiration award.

Sam Mendes said afterwards: "The whole inspiring thing I take seriously.

"Me, if I feel like my films have inspired a couple of people, a couple of kids who are sitting in the back of a dark auditorium, then it's been worth it."

Mendes has already ruled himself out of directing the next Bond film, but admitted he had not chosen his next project.

Another man to rule himself out of directing the next 007 movie is Danny Boyle.

The British director received the Empire Outstanding Contribution award.

Martin Freeman won best actor for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, which was also named best sci-fi/fantasy.

Tom Holland, 16, picked up best male newcomer for his role in The Impossible, where he played the young son in a family separated by the deadly 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.

The Empire Awards are voted for entirely by the public.

Elsewhere Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe was named this year's Empire Hero, while his film The Woman In Black won the award for best horror.

After picking up an Oscar and a Golden Globe, Jennifer Lawrence was named best actress for her performance in The Hunger Games.

While Dame Helen Mirren was handed the Empire Legend award.

The 67-year-old said: "You sort of think really? Do I have to be a legend already? Can't they wait 20 odd years and then make me a legend? But that's alright, I'll take it."
