Joss Whedon is to write Avengers 2, Disney confirms
Disney has confirmed that director Joss Whedon has signed on to write and direct an Avengers sequel.
The 48-year-old will also create a live action Marvel-related TV series for American network ABC, which is owned by Disney.
The Avengers took nearly £1 billion worldwide, making it the third biggest movie of all time.
It is thought the announcement was made by the Disney CEO Bob Iger in a conference call.
Whedon is best known for creating Buffy The Vampire Slayer and its spin-off Angel.
Iger did not discuss any production or release dates for Avengers 2.
Fans can expect a number of related superhero films.
Iron Man 3 is due to debut next May, the Thor sequel is due out November 2013 and the second instalment of Captain America is set for release April 2014.
