Metallica play 1991’s Black album at Download Festival
Metallica played their 1991 "Black" album in full but in reverse order as they headlined Saturday night at this year's Download rock festival.
The band stayed on stage for more than two hours finishing half an hour after their scheduled end at 11.15pm.
Biffy Clyro paid tribute to Metallica in their set before the group on the main stage.
They also debuted three new tracks from their forthcoming double album.
Modern Magic Formula, The Joke's On Us and Victory Over The Sun will all appear on the band's sixth studio album, according to the band.
As well as the new songs, Biffy Clyro played a string of hits from previous albums like Many of Horror, covered by last year's X Factor winner Matt Cardle, and Bubbles.
"I think we've played at Download four times before, so it's nice to be back," said bassist James Johnston.
"We've been in the studio for the last few months so it feels like we've been let out to take on the world a little bit.
"It's a real privilege and an honour to share a stage with a band like Metallica who have opened up this world of music to such a huge amount of people throughout the world."
The sun made its first appearance of the weekend during their set.
Slipknot front man Corey Taylor played an acoustic set in the main tent earlier in the afternoon covering AC/DC track You Shook Me All Night Long, U2's With or Without You and Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb among others.
After his slot he was handed an award for best performance at Download over the past 10 years by organiser Andy Copping and Metal Hammer editor Alexander Milas for Slipknot's headline set in 2009.
He seemed genuinely surprised to receive the honour, saying he'd take the prize back to Ohio and that he wished his bandmates were there to get it with him.
Jack Black's Tenacious D and Steel Panther both pulled in huge crowds to the main stage, with Corey Taylor singing a track with the latter.
The day also saw performances from You Me At Six, who headlined the second stage with Bring Me the Horizon singer Oli Sykes making a guest appearance, LostAlone, Kids In Glass Houses, Black Veil Brides and Lower Than Atlantis.
A re-formed Black Sabbath are the main headliners on Sunday night (10 June) at Download, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.
