Joey Barton on transfer list after Twitter outbursts

Joey Barton

Two words likely to get a reaction from most football fans: Joey Barton.

The midfielder has a history of bad behaviour and spent time in jail for assault but he was one of Newcastle United's best players last season.

Now the 28-year-old has been told he can leave for nothing after a bust-up with the club's board.

It's thought they were unhappy with some of his tweets about the way United was being run.

One of the latest said: "One day the board might realise, what the shirt signifies. HONOUR and PRIDE. Thanks for your continued support........... #toonarmy"

Newsbeat has been in Newcastle to speak to Toon Army fans.

"I think it's an absolute joke. We're going to miss Joey Barton. He was our best player and I absolutely loved him. Mike Ashley is ruining this club, destroying it.

"If we'd got some money for him I'd still be annoyed but it's even worse that he's going for free."

Jack doesn't think Joey deserves his bad boy reputation: "He'd sorted himself out. Last season he was class and he didn't get into any trouble. They can't use that as an excuse."

Dave thinks Joey was right to have a moan on Twitter: "He had a fair point. The club is lacking ambition, selling all the best players off and not replacing them.

"We needed to strengthen even before this, as Kevin Nolan had already gone.

"It just makes things even worse. It's not looking good."

"I'm gutted. Although he had a rant on Twitter, I think it's ridiculous to let one of our best players leave on a free, especially when he's getting into his prime.

"He seems to have proved himself at Newcastle and I think he's settled up here.

"I think we're going to struggle this season especially now Nolan's gone as well. He banged in loads of goals and it was Barton who set them up."
