Adele equals chart music record

Adele has become the first living artist, in nearly 50 years, to have two top five singles and albums in the charts at the same time.

Her single Someone Like You has jumped from number 47 to number one after her performance at last week's Brit awards.

And her album, 21, has kept the top spot for the fourth week running.

Speaking to Radio 1's Reggie on the Official Chart on Sunday, Adele said: "I've never had a number one single. It's amazing.

"I'm probably annoying everyone as well, as I cried at the Brits and everything. I'm just so overwhelmed, I can't believe the response to it."

Also making an appearance in the charts for the 22-year-old, were her other single, Rolling In The Deep in the Official Singles chart at number four, and her debut album 19, in at the same position on the albums chart.

The Beatles were the last band to do the double, back in January 1964, when their singles I Want To Hold Your Hand and She Loves You were in at numbers two and five and their albums With The Beatles and Please Please Me were numbers one and two.

According to the Official Charts Company, sales for artists who performed at the Brits have surged.

Total album sales for Brits' artists were up 70% week on week with Laura Marling's album I Speak Because I Can recording the biggest chart leap from last week's number 80 to this week's number 21.
