Uruguay striker Luis Suarez could face a long ban after appearing to bite an opponent during a World Cup match.

Football's world governing body, Fifa, has opened disciplinary proceedings after Suarez was seen pressing his mouth into the shoulder of the Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini on Tuesday.

He has been suspended twice before for biting at club level, once with Ajax and once with Liverpool.

Some of the most popular memes appeared within minutes of the incident.
