Cheryl Cole has confirmed she will rejoin the X Factor, along with Simon Cowell, for the show's 12th series.

Cole announced her return on Instagram, saying: "Guess what? I'm back."

An accompanying photo showed the 30-year-old pop star with her hands around Cowell's throat, and the caption: "I may actually wring his neck."

The singer first appeared as a judge on the talent show in 2008 but the relationship between musician and mogul hasn't been entirely smooth since then.

The singer had a successful three-year judging stint on the X Factor in the UK from 2008 to 2010.

During that time she coached both Alexandra Burke and Joe McElderry to victory.

Cole was replaced by Nicole Scherzinger in May 2011, after attending X Factor auditions in two US cities.

The Newcastle singer's footage was used in the first hour of the show's premiere later that year.

Scherzinger was described as not "an obvious improvement" by one critic, while the Los Angeles Times complimented Cole's "fabulous Geordie accent".

2013 - Cole gets a pay out

In November last year, Cole won a payout from the producers of X Factor USA.

She sued Blue Orbit for $2.3m (£1.4m) for loss of earnings earlier this year.

The case has now been settled out of court, with the production company paying Cole an undisclosed sum.

Cowell had hinted at the plans last year when he told the Metro: "Cheryl and I patched up our differences a long time ago.

"I saw her recently, we speak a lot on the phone and text each other, and I think both of us would like the idea of working together again."

After Monday's announcement, the music mogul tweeted that "she is a brilliant judge of talent".

The singer has been on the judging panel since 2012 but according to reports she is expected to leave to return to her music career.
